A beginners guide to houseplants will hopefully make it easier for you to jump into picking up some up plants, or encourage you to get even more!
Why Get an Indoor Plant?
I first got into indoor plants because I had read about the healthy benefits for the home. I consider myself a fairly non-toxic person, meaning I use products low in toxins for my body, household cleaners, etc…So when I was researching how to be better with that, I stumbled upon plants. Not only do they improve the air quality but they’re pretty, add a nice dose of color and give a fresh feel to the house.
- Pretty
- Colors your home
- Provide extra oxygen
- Purify your air
- Reduce harmful chemicals
A Beginners Guide to Houseplants
When you’re first starting out, just think about the basics when picking out an indoor plant.
- Watering
- Sunlight
- Non-Toxic to People/Animals
I know that one obstacle when starting out is figuring out watering. All you hear about is people killing their plants because they over or under watered. Lucky for you I have an entire blog post about how to water indoor plants, and here’s the IGTV video! I prefer the bottom watering method. It ensures your plant get just the right amount of water.
You’ll also want to consider light. Do they need indirect light, direct light, etc… Which means you need to have an idea of where you’d like to place the plants as well. Most indoor plants like bright, indirect light. So they like to be next to a well lit window with no direct sunbeams on them. A lot of them can get sunburned if the light hits them directly.
Make sure when you’re picking out non-toxic indoor plants that they’re safe for kids, cats and/or dogs. Whoever you have in your house do some research to make sure that if they were to eat the plant, they’ll be OK. Now I’m pretty confident my child won’t be eating our plants, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Below are some resources to make sure you’re picking out non-toxic houseplants.
