Pinterest is buzzing about this DIY crayon craft – how to take old, broken crayons and make them new again. It’s a great family craft so I had my helper, my daughter, give me a hand. I can’t say we have too many broken ones since she loves fixing things and make us tape all broken crayons together.
My main motivation was restaurant crayons. I have a horrible habit of taking all of them because they get used for ten minutes and there is still so much of them left! Even though the quality isn’t good, it’s nice to re-purpose them.
Once you’ve had your fun with this kids crafts, head over and paint a cute owl from a coffee can!
Here’s what you’ll need: crayons, a silicone mold, cutting board and knife. If you’re feeling extra strong you can skip the knife situation but I had some of those large toddler crayons and my gym habits have been less-than-stellar lately.
Here’s the hands on part for the kid. She absolutely loved ripping off all the wrappers. Normally I tell her no, because who wants all that exposed crayon getting all over the carpet? Then I told her to break the small ones up – that put a smile on her face!
After you’ve peeled and broken up the crayons you’ll fill the molds up. Go ahead and really fill them up because they melt well. Combining all the fun colors makes for beautiful results. Heck, this could even be a learning moment asking your child to combine different shades of colors!
Bake at 230 degrees for around 15 minutes. Let them cool for at least an hour until they’ve fully set.
A little disclaimer about the craft. The molds I purchased, on sale at Michael’s for $3, are a little small. Luckily toddlers have small hands, well so do I. Molds are typically on sale after a season or holiday and in various shapes, so keep a look out!

Well at least we can put them to good use!
