An easy, festive and impactful DIY Ramadan decoration that my kids would get excited about. That’s why I love these DIY Ramadan Luminaries.
I envisioned these for when you’re hosting an iftar. Such a fun, festive look for your guests are coming, and going!
But ya know, I’m not sure we’ll be hosting iftars this year. So instead. Make your house festive. Bring a little glow to your Ramadan dinners.

Let’s check out the supplies. White paper bags, a moon & star hole craft punch and battery-operated tea lights. For this project I used eight paper bags but if you have a large walkway you can use the entire paper bag pack. This one comes with 24 bags.
And don’t think I’m asking you to buy the craft punch for just this! We’ve already used it for my daughter’s kids Ramadan hat. And I’ll be using it for another craft too.
Take a bag and hole punch four across. But first, let me show you how to fit all four on the paper bag.
So start the hole punch slightly over on the paper bag – where it lines up with that little indentation.
Start the second one where it looks like it’s covering a bit of the stars.
Do that for a total of four times across. That’s all that will fit and it’s enough to look cute and make an impact.
Look at the cute confetti it makes! Don’t worry, I’ll be using it later for another Ramadan craft.
Now open up the bag ad insert battery operated tea lights and a weight. In this case, I had actual tea lights, not lit, as the weight. Rocks will obviously work really well too.
Here’s a close up of the bag lit.
Here they are all lit up outside.
And, I thought I’d show them inside as well – with the lights on.
Now let’s turn those lights off. So fun and festive!
DIY Ramadan Paper Bag Luminaries
Supplies
- White paper bags: 8-20 – depending on your walkway
- Moon and star hole punch
- Tea lights, battery operated: 8 – 20
- Rock or another weight
Directions
- Cut each paper bag should you need to. The white ones I purchased are approximately 8 3/4 inches high, so I didn’t need to cut them.
- Hole punch with moon and star craft punch. Keep the paper bag folded.
- I squeezed in four punches across. You’ll start the hole punch slightly over on the paper bag – where it lines up with that little indentation.
- Start the second one where it looks like it’s covering a bit of the stars.
- Hole punch for a total of four times across.
- Put one battery-operated tea light in each bag.
- Now add a weight, like a rock or a tea light, to help the bags stay put.
- Line up the bag down your walkway and enjoy!
