I hoard stuff. This time it was a left over vase from a set of flowers my lovely husband had got me. It’s a puke green vase, that depending on the light, looks even worse. But something about the geometric shape made me say, save it, it’ll look pretty painted. And that’s what I did. Now it’s the perfect DIY succulent vase.
I knew I wanted to paint it gold because we’re obsessed with the Ralph Lauren metallic gold color. I don’t know why, we just like it. Which is funny because when I was younger I really didn’t like gold. Silver was much nicer to me, gold was old people stuff. Maybe that’s because the gold seemed flat and today we have golds that are richer with some shimmer? Or maybe it’s because I’m old. Anyways…you’ll have left over paint, so after this project go paint a lampshade gold!
Let’s get started. Step one, skip sanding. Sweet! Step two, wash the vase with light soap and water. Let it dry completely. Step three, paint. I mean seriously, that’s it! No extras here just your paint and brush. Who wouldn’t want to paint that thing? Ew.
I obviously needed to get the toddler involved so I can get this done, so she can help on the first coat. Good job babe. I see a bright DIY future.
Once I put the gold paint on the first layer it looked, well not cute, so I kept going. I really wanted a richer feel so I decided to give it three coats to really amp it up. You’ll notice I did coat one with a paint brush, and two coats with a small roller to cut down on the dripping, unevenness of the paint and for the finished product to look smoother.
Once you’ve painted to your liking, you’ll need to get a plant! Can I be honest? My daughter picked out the plant, and kudos for her on her good taste. Now that the vase is fully dry, I put some rocks and soil about 3/4 of the way and placed the plant inside. Water for good measure and you’ve got yourself one fine-looking DIY succulent vase!
