Paint changes everything. Which is why, if you find something you like, I say you buy it and paint it. OK fine, within reason. But that’s why I wanted to do a quick blog post about how to spray paint paper star lanterns for Ramadan.
We found these IKEA paper lanterns after the Christmas season on clearance. They were a great size and shape so I just knew we should pick them up and paint them.
So I picked up five different spray paints colors, since we had five stars. You don’t have to paint each one of them different colors but we were feeling festive and wanted a fun, colorful impact.

How to Spray Paint Paper Star Lanterns for Ramadan
Here are what the paper star lanterns looked like before.
First, you’ll need to assemble the stars per the instructions.
Next up, take a piece of string, and place the string through the hanging holes. Tie those strings together to form a loop.
Now tie that loop.
Next, tie another piece of long string to the loop. Make sure it’s long enough, because this string will used to hang up the star.
Now you’ll need to hang the string up and prep the area for spray paint. If you have to spray paint it up against something, take a tablecloth or trash bag and cover the wall up.
Here are the spray paints I used. Rust-Oleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover in: Lagoon, Golden Sunset, Real Orange, Colonial Red & Purple.
You’ll notice one is matte. It wasn’t available in glossy at my store, but I don’t mind. It still looks good!
Let’s jump into it. Since they are paper we don’t have to sand anything. So just start spraying. First coat. Let dry.
Because of those lines, we ended up doing two coats. Here they are all!
Here they are hung up inside above the mantel. Since they already have string attached, just take that string, wrap it around a thumb nail, and push into the ceiling to hang.
Here’s the final look of the colorful, fireplace decorations.
