After my Instagram stories, and the feedback on face products, I thought I’d share with you my favorite pregnancy skin care products and routine – specifically for the face. I’m not saying I have the world’s nicest skin but I do think I’ve found some products that have enhanced my skin. And that’s 37 year-old skin with two kids – that’s good.
It’s also important to add that I’m breastfeeding my son, so all face care products must be safe for me and my baby. Finding breastfeeding approved skin care products can be a pain. I can’t use retinols and my wrinkles need it! This also means all the skin care products are safe for pregnancy, so I’ve got your pregnancy skin care covered here too.
I frequently use EWG – Skin Deep website to make sure the products I use are safe and as non-toxic as they can be. I highly recommend using their website for all skin care related products, including hair care and makeup to find those non toxic skincare products.

My Favorite Pregnancy Skin Care Products
Day Time Face Routine
- Rinse face with water. No face wash!
- Apply am moisturizer – CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion AM
Let’s talk about the no face wash in the morning real quick. I read a few years ago that there is no need to wash your face in the morning. Doing so strips your face of those good oils you need. And at the time I was getting a lot of pimples so I thought, I’ll try anything. And I’ll be damned if it didn’t work! I swear by only washing your face at night. Pimples or no pimples.
AM Moisturizer. We all know you should wear SPF everyday on your skin and the CeraVe moisturizer has an SPF 30. It’s a lightweight, non-greasy moisturizer I’ve been using for years. It gets the job done.
Night Time Face Routine
- Wash face – Neutrogena Naturals Purifying Facial Cleanser or Tatcha The Deep Cleanse
- Apply toner – Ursie’s Apothecary Apples & Oranges Face Toner
- Apply pm moisturizer – Andalou Naturals Night Repair Cream
- Apply facial oil – Youth to the People Maqui + Acai Prickly Pear Goji Glow Oil or Honest Organic Facial Oil or True Botanicals Pure Radiance Oil
Face wash. Neutrogena Natural Purifying Facial Cleanser. I’ve been using this for a couple of years now. It is a solid, good face wash. A couple months ago though I picked up a small sized Tatcha The Deep Cleanse face wash and it’s really great. I feel clean, it smells nice and has tiny little beads to exfoliate – very gently. It is however, quite expensive for a face wash. I did like it though.
Toner. This has been my favorite product I’ve used on my face so far. I found it at Magnolia Night Market in Riverside. Supporting local companies is important to me. Plus she had an emphasis on non toxic products – so even better. Word on the street is apple cider vinegar is awesome for skin so I was looking for a toner with that in it. After just one month, I noticed a huge difference. My skin seemed brighter, my age spots lighter and just an overall more even skin tone. Just a head’s up, it does smell like apple cider vinegar which isn’t wonderful but the smells disappears and soon as it dries – about 60 seconds after you apply it. If you’d like to use just apple cider vinegar, use Bragg’s organic apple cider vinegar and dilute with water, for about a 50/50 blend. This pure mix will jump start your skin a little quicker and get rid of skin tags too! It does take about two months of consistent application to see your skin tags fall off. However, the smell does still linger on your face. I would recommend taking it easy with Ursie’s or using the diluted version for a while to jump start, then switch to Ursie’s.
Serum. I just started getting into the serum idea but honestly, the Murad one I got didn’t really do anything for me and it was expensive. So the jury’s out on serums right now.
PM Moisturizer. I’m now on my second bottle of Andalou Naturals Night Repair Cream. The lotion is on the thicker side but it doesn’t feel heavy. I have seen a slight improvement with my skin and wrinkles, but just a little. It’s hard to find a night time moisturizer that helps you look younger and deal with wrinkles when you are pregnant or breastfeeding because you aren’t supposed to use retinol. Retinol is king for fighting wrinkles.
And if I wasn’t breastfeeding I’d probably be using Roc Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Anti-Aging Night Cream, which I’ve used before, or trying Dr. Dennis Ferulic + Retinol Wrinkle Recovery Overnight Serum. This is when I’d break out the big guys to do some heavy lifting on my skin.
PS. Moisturizer first, then oil. That seems to be the general consensus. The idea being oil acts more like a barrier, not letting anything through to your skin so the moisturizer needs to go on first.
Facial Oil – Youth to the People Maqui + Acai Prickly Pear Goji Glow Oil. I got into oils because I read somewhere that they’re awesome and at the time my skin was super dry. Well it works! Now my skin is super hydrated and glowing. I only use two drops at night. And if I get drier, then I just add more drops.
A few notes on the oils. Right now I’m into Youth to the People, but I have used Honest Oil and True Botanicals. I purchased two samples of True Botanicals oils – one basics hydrate pure radiance oil, and a renew pure radiance oil. The basics oil is lighter than the Honest oil and to be frank, I like it more. It does have an earthy smell to it, but that does seem to go away after it sinks into my skin. The True Botanicals pure radiance oil, is $38, a $10 difference from Honest Oil. Also, they say that it’s perfectly safe for pregnancy. The renew pure radiance oil is $110. And my current oil, Youth to the People Maqui + Acai Prickly Pear Goji Glow Oil is $44.
Can I go on a tangent for a minute here? I remember growing up and oil on your face was frowned upon. Those oil blot papers were everywhere and the matte look was in. So I carried that mentality on with me into my freaking 30’s. Until one day I was watching someone on Instagram with super amazing skin. She was doing a story at night and apologized for her face being so oily, it’s just apart of her night time routine. And something clicked. Well damn, you are supposed to hydrate your skin like mad. It wasn’t her apologizing that clicked but rather her moisturizing her face within an inch of it’s life. And no joke, my skin has been better for it. And now I aim for dewy skin!
Weekly Face Care Routine
- Face scrub about two – three times a week – Acure Brilliantly Brightening Facial Scrub
- Clay masque – once a week – Aveda Botanical Kinetics Deep Cleaning Clay Masque
- Face masks, I do them a few times a month, see my favorites here
- Facial mists, I currently don’t use but they seem fun and relaxing, right?
Face scrub – Acure Brilliantly Brightening Facial Scrub. Face scrubs are a must. I wasn’t using them before because I was lazy and didn’t understand the importance of sloughing off old, dead skin cells. I really like this product and it produces wonderful results. My skin always looks refreshed and clear after I use it, which is about two to three times a week.
Clay masque – I recently discovered Aveda’s clay masque after a facial. It really helped to deep clean my face and close up my pores. Her recommendation was to put the mask on in the shower, let the steam open up your pores for a deeper clean, then rinse off. I will say it does sting a tiny amount at first, but then goes away. I really like this product!
